Vascular

A vascular doctor is a medical specialist who diagnoses, manages, and treats diseases of the circulatory system. This includes all arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels outside of the heart and brain. They treat conditions affecting blood flow, ranging from varicose veins to life-threatening blockages.

Vascular doctors manage a wide variety of diseases, including:

  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): Plaque buildup in the arteries that reduces blood flow
    to the limbs.
  • Varicose and Spider Veins: Enlarged, twisted veins caused by poor valve function.
  • Aneurysms: Dangerous bulging or weakening of the artery walls (e.g., abdominal aortic
    aneurysm).
  • Carotid Artery Disease: Narrowing of the neck arteries, which can restrict blood flow to
the brain and increase stroke risk.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Blood clots that form in deep veins, usually in the legs.

A primary care physician typically refers a patient to a vascular doctor or provider when
experiencing poor circulation or have risk factors like high blood pressure or high
cholesterol. Common symptoms include leg pain when walking, leg swelling, or
non-healing sores on the feet.
