A urologist is a medical doctor and surgeon who specializes in diagnosing and treating
diseases of the urinary system in all genders, as well as the male reproductive system and
adrenal glands.

Urologists treat issues related to the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Common
urinary tract conditions include kidney stones, urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary
incontinence (leaking or lack of bladder control), bladder pain syndrome (interstitial cystitis),
and blood in the urine (hematuria).

While a common misconception is that urologists only treat men, they treat patients of all
genders.

• In Men: They specialize in the prostate, testicles, penis, and related conditions like
  erectile dysfunction, male infertility, and enlarged prostate (BPH).
• In Women: They treat pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladders, and pelvic floor issues,
  often working alongside gynecologists.

A primary care physician typically refers a patient to a urologist when experiencing ongoing
difficulty or pain when urinating, frequent or uncontrollable urges to pee, pelvic or lower
back pain or sexual dysfunction or fertility issues.
