A nephrologist is a specialized medical doctor who focuses on diagnosing and treating
kidney-related diseases. They primarily manage conditions that affect kidney function, such
as chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidney failure, severe high blood pressure, and complex
electrolyte imbalances.

Nephrologists are experts in how the kidneys filter waste, balance bodily fluids, and maintain
blood pressure. Unlike urologists, who are surgeons that address structural issues and
blockages in the urinary tract, nephrologists treat systemic issues affecting the internal
function of the kidneys.

They routinely manage and treat conditions including:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
  • Diabetes-related kidney damage (Diabetic nephropathy)
  • High blood pressure (Hypertension)
  • Fluid and electrolyte imbalances (e.g., abnormal sodium or potassium levels)
  • Kidney infections and inflammation (Glomerulonephritis)

Patients are typically referred to a nephrologist by their primary care doctor or provider.
