BCH Implements Epic Comprehensive Health Record

Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center will convert to a single, integrated health record system when it launches Epic and the One Chart | Patient portal at its main hospital campus on Dec.1.

Epic, the most widely-used comprehensive health record system, was implemented in BCH-owned physician clinics in October 2016. The addition of Epic in the hospital setting will bring the organization’s multiple health record systems into one shared platform for patient care.

“Integrating a shared electronic health record for our eight physician clinics and our hospital services allows us to move toward a seamless patient experience,” BCH CEO Rick Haraldson said. “We believe that means better care for our patients.”

When the hospital goes live with Epic on Dec. 1, all BCH providers will have the information they need from one system regardless of the clinic or hospital department in which the patient is seen. This includes medications, allergies, immunizations, lab results and health histories.

All organizations using Epic interoperate as well, which means providers can easily exchange patient data, closing care gaps and reducing duplication. Patients’ records will include their health history not only from their visits to the BCH hospital and clinics, but also from other locations where they receive care.

In addition to providers, patients will also have easier, more convenient access to health record information through the One Chart | Patient portal (also known as MyChart).

One Chart | Patient is a free, secure, online portal that will enable patients to view test results, update information, communicate with their care team, and manage appointments and prescriptions online using an app or website on their phone or computer. One Chart will replace the Connect2MyCare patient portal and will provide more services and convenience for patients with all hospital and hospital-owned clinic health record information available through a single site. Information about hospital services received prior to Dec. 1 will remain available on Connect2MyCare (provided by Change Healthcare).

The new system will also consolidate billing and improve the patient experience by providing patients with one combined hospital and physician clinic statement, with online bill pay available.

"We are excited,” Haraldson said, “about having one affordable, integrated system that builds on our foundation of putting the needs of patients first, while maintaining a financially strong, independent hospital.”

In Nebraska, Beatrice is part of the Nebraska Medicine Community Connect Epic network that currently includes Great Plains Health in North Platte, Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk and Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.
