Never too Late to Make a Change
Jason Schmid was successfully running the business and marketing side of his wife’s behavioral health practice when he decided to make a career change.
With a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Doane College, he decided to engage in the clinical practice side, treating patients alongside his wife, Melissa, at Personal Growth Counseling in Lincoln, first as a Licensed Mental Health Practitioner and later becoming a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner in 2013.
“I thought this was an interesting field, and decided to join her,” Jason said.
For the past 11 years Jason has worked at Genesis Psychiatric Group in Lincoln as part of a team providing integrated psychiatric and psychological care for a diverse population.
Now, as the newest member of the BCH Behavioral Health Team, he will work with patients on-site in the clinic and from home through telehealth visits.
Jason said all behavioral health work is interesting and necessary, but he has a passion for the more complicated cases, such as those patients with co-occurring issues, those needing medications and those needing hospitalization.
“I like the tough cases,” he said. Jason said he also believes in integrated treatment and collaborating with a patient’s medical care team for optimal improvements in a patient’s life.
When Jason and Melissa are not caring for patients, they are caring for four children, ranging in age from 15 to 23. Jason said he enjoys traveling, cooking and golf, and, of course, all the activities that come with raising a family of four.
