Samantha Bruna DAISY Award Winner

May 9, 2024

Beatrice Community Hospital honored Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse Samantha Bruna with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses during Nurses Week in May.

The award is part of The DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Bruna is a night shift Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery. She was nominated by Kayla Norton, a BCH Emergency Department Registered Nurse. In her nomination, Norton noted the exceptional care Bruna provided during an emergency situation in the Emergency Department.

Norton shared: “The room was full of an entire team of nurses, RTs (registered therapists) and the OB doctor, but Sam stood out tremendously. She directed every team member efficiently and took charge of the entire situation. Sam was not only an incredible leader to our staff, but she took the time to explain everything that was happening to the mom and her family members. Sam stood by the patient and spoke gently and calmly to her and provided the most passionate care that a patient in this situation could ask for. … I’ve known Sam for a few years, and she has always been a great nurse, but seeing her interact with this patient and the way she showed so much love and support to her was incredible.”

Bruna was honored at a special presentation on May 7 in Acute Care, surrounded by family and co-workers. She received a bouquet of daisies, a certificate, a pin and the Healer’s Touch sculpture. In the tradition of DAISY Award celebrations everywhere, cinnamon rolls were served in honor of J. Patrick Barnes, for whom The DAISY Foundation and The DAISY Award were founded. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

“It is an incredible honor to be able to recognize our nursing staff for the phenomenal work they do,” BCH Chief Nursing Officer Tasha Hesman said. “Our partnership with The DAISY Foundation allows our patients and family to recognize the great work our nursing staff does day in and day out.”
