Quiet Hour at the Hospital

Quiet please. We know a peaceful, quiet environment is invaluable to our patients as they recover from illness and surgery, so we recruited a few of our employees' children to remind us to be quiet when we enter the Acute Care Wing. Our June reminder is from Claire and Peyton.

Quiet Hour
Daily 4 p.m.-5 p.m.

We have implemented a Quiet Hour for our inpatients by carving out an hour every afternoon of undisturbed peace and quiet.

Research suggests that hospital noise actually harms patients, interfering with the healing process, disturbing sleep, and increasing stress levels. A quiet environment is a healing environment. Noise is a stressor and sleep is a vital component in the recovery process.

Quiet Hour from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. will look very much like the environment looks like at 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. in the morning.

  • Lights are turned down.
  • Talking in the hallway is hushed. Phone conversations are held away from patients.
  • The patient room doors are closed and efforts are made to give the patients 60 minutes of rest.
  • We try to schedule therapy and treatments outside of the Quiet Hour.

Patient care will not be compromised during this hour if the patient's condition so warrants.

Visitors will be encouraged to participate in Quiet Hour by allowing their loved one to rest.
