When Todd Bowhay was presented with the option of same day hip replacement surgery and not needing to spend the night in the hospital, he didn’t hesitate to say yes.
Bowhay, a 60-year-old Liberty, Nebraska, man, said he had complete confidence in his orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Derek Weichel, and he liked the idea of being able to spend the night in his own bed.
Hip replacement surgery typically requires a one- or two-night stay in the hospital as the surgical site heals, pain is controlled and rehab begins. With same day hip replacement surgery, a patient has surgery, meets with rehab, and returns home all on the same day.
While Bowhay said his recovery at home went well, he admitted that having a solid support system at home was instrumental to his success. In addition, he said physical therapy is a necessary part of the recovery process.
“PT is essential, and Garret (VanBrocklin) at the hospital does a great job,” Bowhay said. “Dr. Weichel is a very hands-on doctor, and his staff is incredible.”
Bowhay said that while same day hip replacement surgery may not be an option for everyone, it was the right option for him.
Bowhay is pleased to report that he has returned to work as a trucker and is again playing golf in his spare time.
